Welcome
Anchored by hands-on creative studios, shops, and a growing number of acclaimed restaurants, Delmar Maker District in St. Louis today is an emerging city sandbox where makers, artists, and entrepreneurs from all backgrounds come together to think with their hands, bridge divides, and inspire the next generation.
A Brief History
It all began back in 2002 when Jim McKelvey and Doug Auer saw potential in an old car dealership on Delmar Boulevard. They turned it into Third Degree Glass Factory, an 8,000 sq. ft. studio and gallery for glass art.
At the time, the glass-making scene in St. Louis was fairly obscure, but the guys wanted to change that. They opened their doors, offering classes and events that got the whole community involved. The excitement led to the launch of Third Friday events, a monthly celebration offering live demonstrations, music and collaborations among artists and makers.
Their success got them thinking bigger. By 2017, they started buying up more properties along Delmar, dreaming of a place where all kinds of makers could come together. That's how the idea behind Delmar Maker District was born, stretching from Union to Kingshighway Boulevards.
Before long, the district was buzzing. MADE Makerspace opened in 2018, providing artists with tools and training in everything from woodworking to laser cutting. Craft Alliance moved in a couple of years later, offering classes and exhibitions in various art media. The Magic House set up MADE for Kids, a hands-on space where children can explore activities like 3D printing and robotics.
More recently, the district has become a culinary hotspot with restaurants like Esca, known for its coastal Mediterranean cuisine with an emphasis on charcoal and wood cooking. Florentin brings a taste of Tel Aviv to the area, offering Israeli-inspired vegetarian dishes like shakshuka and falafel. You can satisfy your sweet tooth at Beyond Sweet Kitchen + Bar, grab a gourmet, over-the-top hot dog at Steve's Hot Dogs, or indulge in ice cream and cocktails at The Fountain on Delmar.
Delmar Maker District continues to grow, supporting local talent and providing unique experiences for everyone in St. Louis. Whether you're creating, tasting, or exploring with family, your presence here adds to the story.
